Movie It Is!

Ok, people seem keen to watch the movie, so at our October meeting we'll have that to add to our discussion.  Happy reading, and we'll hope to see you on the 16th!

A Study in Scarlet

The votes are in an we'll be reading Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's first Sherlock Holmes story, the novel A Study in Scarlet.  And as mentioned in our previous post, the meeting will be on Sunday October 16th at 11:30am.

Now, as older members know, if there's a movie that has been based on the book we're reading oftentimes we'll watch it.  There are no faithful film adaptations of this novel (according to wikipedia; if you know otherwise feel free to correct me), however the first episode of the 2010 BBC series Sherlock--which was mentioned briefly in our last meeting--A Study in Pink, is a loose adaptation of the novel, and retains many of its core elements.  The episode is 90 minutes long and can pretty much stand alone.  It's set in modern times, stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, and is pretty awesome.  I was thinking it might be a fun addition to our meeting to watch it together, but it might not be up everyone's alley, so let's put it to a vote.  Have your say on the blog poll by Sunday at 4:00pm.

Mixed Bag October!

We had a great turnout at Sunday's meeting; thank you to all the members, old and new, who came out and made our discussion such a success!

Since we had such a large group we collected book suggestions for October's meeting on the spot, and we also decided on the meeting date: Sunday October 16th.  Since October has Thanksgiving and Reading Week that's pretty much the only available weekend.

Our book suggestions were all over the place, so we decided not to bother sticking to a specific genre for this month, and have instead declared it Mixed Bag October (or MBO if you prefer).  Vote for your favourite on the blog poll by Friday at 10:00am and we'll post the results shortly thereafter.

Meeting Location

Good news, Bookworms: we've got a real room!  Room 215 in the University Center (UCU) to be precise.  For anyone new, the UCU is the the skinny building between Monpetit and Morriset.

We'll hope to see a bunch of you there on Sunday for some Game of Thrones fun.

Next Meeting: September 18th

Votes are in and our next meeting will be on Sunday September 18th at 11:30am.  That gives us some time to see about a room, so we'll let you know the week before the meeting where it will be held.

Oops!

I made a little blunder in the poll, thank you Lindsay for pointing it out!  Both Sunday meetings would take place at 11:30 AM, not pm as one says, and both Wednesday meetings would be at 5:30 pm.  Sorry for the confusion!

September's Meeting

Hello Bookworms,

Another semester is almost upon us, and with it, another meeting (at which we'll be discussing George R. R. Martin's A Game of Thrones).  Vote for the time (or times, you can select multiple answers) that would work best for you on our blog poll by Sunday the 4th at 1:00, after which point we'll send out the results.

Because it's the beginning of a new year, we're going through the club-renewal process and certain privileges are currently denied us, namely room booking.  This means that if we hold our meeting on either of the earlier dates we definitely won't be able to book a room, and if we hold it on one of the later dates there's still a pretty good chance we won't be able to book a room.

I hope this won't deter anyone from attending, as there are many common areas around campus that can serve us well for this meeting.  We'll scope them out over the next few days and let you know on Sunday where the meeting will be held.  If anyone has any locations in mind, we welcome your suggestions!
