Rooms are Booked: Let the Reading Begin

Hey guys. I hope you guys aren't too stressed about your exams and essays.

We've booked our rooms for the January meeting. UCU 206 is located near the junction between MNT and UCU on the same floor as Tim Hortons.

January 11th 12:00 pm - 2:30 pm. Room UCU 206
January 18th 12:00 pm - 2:30 pm. Room UCU 206

Happy Holidays and Happy Reading!

Stella.

During the Holidays, we'll be reading...

Thank you for voting in the tiebreaker! This time, the choice was obvious. I hope you guys are ready to read some fantasy books because we'll be comparing American Gods by Neil Gaiman to Vicious by V.E. Schwab!

Gods, ExtraOrdinaries, Prison Inmates, Oh My!

The next thing to do is decide when our January Meetings should take place. Since not that many people have voted (probably because you're unsure of your January schedules), we are extending the Meeting Time poll to Tuesday, November 26th at 10 PM.

Enjoy your holidays.
Happy reading.

Vote for our next meeting time and a tie breaker...sort of.

Just like last month, this month's poll was fierce! In fact, there was only one vote separating the top 3 choices. Keeping in tune with what we discussed in an earlier poll, we feel like such a close result deserves something more. That's why we're holding a "tie break" between the top three options.

Your three finalists are:
The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill vs The Help by Kathryn Stockett - which had 13 votes.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman vs Vicious by V. E. Schwab - which also had 13 votes.

The Kite Runner vs A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseni - which had 14 votes.

A new poll is now up to decide the winner. You will have until Sunday, at 10 pm to get your votes in.

One more thing...I hope I'm not putting you to sleep. Bare with me. We have also put up another poll on the website; this one is to decide our top two meeting times for January.

You will have until Monday, November 25th, 10 pm to vote for this poll.

Go crazy.

Recommendation Time: Next Meeting's Book(s)

For the past few years, we didn't have a December meeting because of the whole Final Exams thing or Members Going Home thing. What we typically do was read a series or multiple books and meet in January. Last year we read Divergent and Insurgent. This year we are thinking of doing something similar:

A) read two books and have a "compare and contrast" or
B) reading a series (or at least part of it).

Below I've listed some suggestions. Feel free to recommend more, please fill out the suggestion form.

Compare and Contrast:
Cultural:
The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill
vs The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Ink by Amanda Sun
vs Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff

Myth/Fantasy:
American Gods by Neil Gaiman
vs Vicious by V. E. Schwab

Works Written by the Same Author:
The Kite Runner
vs A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseni

Series:
(You are not obligated to read the entire series. Maybe 2 to 3 books in the series.)
The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks
Eon by Allison Goodman
The Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
The Dark Tower by Stephen King
Sprawl (Neuromancer) by William Gibson
The Dune Chronicle by Frank Herbert
The Seven Realms Quartet by Cinda Williams Chima
The Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness
The Lunar Chronicle by Marissa Meyer
Half World by Hiromi Goto
The Lotus War by Jay Kristoff
Department 19 by Will Hill
The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

Don't see anything you like? Fill out a Recommendation/Feedback Form, or tell us over on Facebook.

You have until Wednesday to send in your suggestions. (Which also happens to be the last day you can vote on the changes happening to the uOttawa Bookworms.)

Happy reading.

Changes Are Coming to the uOttawa Bookworms!

Hi Bookworms, I hope you guys are doing well. :)

This morning, Ashley and I attended a Clubs Training Session and a Clubs General Assembly and we learned a lot about how to improve our club. A few things were discussed and we would like to get your opinions on some of these potential changes. Two separate polls are now up on our website to get your feedback regarding Changes 1 and 2.

1) Multiple Meetings Per Month:
We've noticed that some of our poll results are very tight and certain book/meeting time choices are almost equally favoured. This could bring trouble for people who wanted to attend a certain time slot but the time slot loses in the poll by 1 or 2 votes. So we would like your opinion on whether to host 2 meetings each month, so people can have an option on which one they would like to attend. (The 2 meeting times would be chosen based on the 2 most popular time slots voted by you.) You do not need to attend both meetings, just the one that is convenient for you. (But if you want to join us for both, we would love to see you there.)

2) French Books:
At our Clubs Training today, the SFUO discussed having more inclusion in the clubs and we feel like having a French book as an option every month would bring more diversity to the club. (I personally don't know many French books so I would love it if people can fill out a Recommendation/Feedback Form to help me out.)

3) Recommendation/Feedback Form:
Sometimes emailing us could be a hassle. You need to log in to your email and la dee da - you're too lazy. This is why we are going to add a new tab to the top of the Bookworms website called "Recommendation/Feedback." On this page, you'll find a Google Docs Form where you can submit book recommendations and/or feedbacks. It's SUPER easy (and you can choose to be anonymous.) So if you have suggestions on how our club experience can be improved, just fill out a short online form and we will see what we can do. You can always give us book recommendations/feedback on our Facebook page. (https://www.facebook.com/UOttawaBookworms)

Thanks for reading this HUGE post.
We will have our next book club meeting in January. Good luck on all of your Finals. May the Force Be With You.

Campus Reporters and Columnists Wanted

Hello Bookworms, we received this email in our inbox and they would like us to pass this opportunity on to you guys.

Greetings,
The Prince Arthur Herald — Canada’s largest student-run national newspaper — is looking for news reporters to immediately fill several openings in its roster and provide student-oriented coverage on a vast array of events and issues. Politics, business, sports, technology, media, arts, culture, and life reporters are all welcome!
The Prince Arthur Herald has a nation-wide and diverse audience. We’ve appeared and are still appearing on the various media circuits. Members of the team have been guests on CBC, CTV, BBC Radio, and CJAD 800!
This is a great opportunity for student journalists who are aspiring to break into the scene and beef up their resumes. Our student writers — some of whom started with little to no experience — have progressed tremendously, as some of them now contribute to the Huffington Post, the National Post, and o.canada.com.
We’re looking for reporters who are driven, hardworking, creative, and willing to take initiative. Reporters will be working closely with the Prince Arthur Herald’s news editor and editor-in-chief in completing and submitting stories.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please send an email stating your interest with a resume and ideally a writing sample attached to cschultealbert@princearthurherald.com as soon as possible.

See you on November the 16th

Sorry for the delay, Bookworms.
We encountered some technical difficulties when we tried to book our next meeting room.

But fear not! This has been solved and we will meet November 16th in UCU 206.

If you can't make it to this time, but you want to discuss the book with fellow club members, head to our Goodreads group and post your thoughts in the discussion board.

A Winner is Crowned. A New Round of Voting Begins.

It doesn't get any closer than this. You guys have chosen The Book Thief by Markus Zusak for our November Book of the Month. Scott Westerfeld is crying in a corner somewhere because his book, Leviathan, lost out by just one vote!

The poll for our next meeting time is up on our website now. Let us know if you guys are open to the idea of going to watch the movie adaptation afterwards. The Book Thief opens in theatres November 15th. Here is the movie trailer:

Are you on Goodreads?

Are you on Goodreads.com? We know a few of our members are users on Goodreads and would love to connect with fellow book club members on there. If you want to share your Goodreads profile with us, you can do so in three ways:

1) Comment below with your Goodreads link
2) Email us your Goodreads link
3) Post on our Facebook page your Goodreads link

We will create a tab on the website dedicated to Goodreads info; that way other club members can befriend you on there.

Q: So what is http://goodreads.com/?
A: It's basically a website where you can catalog the books you've read and find more books to read. You can post reviews, interact with other book-lovers and look-up book ratings.

Q: I don't have an account. Is sign up free?
A: Of course! And signing up is easy. As far as I know, you can sign up using your email, Facebook, Twitter or Google +.

Anyways, that's it. Our book club is also on Goodreads. Feel free to join our group and give us some loooove. It's pretty empty right now.

The November Book Poll is up!

Hi Bookworms! The poll is now up! This time we included genres AND individual books.

  • If a genre is to win this poll, we will then start a new poll with books from that particular genre. Of course, recommendations will be welcome. The winner of that poll will be our Book of the Month for November.
  • If a specific book is to win this poll, that book will be automatically be our Book of the Month for Novemeber.

So these are the options in the latest poll. You can vote for more than one (hopefully that will relieve some bookworms dilemma). The poll will close on Thursday, 5pm sharp.

Welcome Back

Good morning / afternoon / evening Bookworms,

I hope that all of you have had a sensational summer the past 4 months whether you have been taking classes to get ahead, working, traveling, or just enjoying yourself as you should.

I wanted to take the opportunity to welcome you all back for the new school year. It's my last one at uOttawa so it's a little bittersweet, but I'm really looking forward to having another year of great book discussions with all of you.

First off, please let me know if you have graduated or did not sign up to be on our mailing list yet somehow get emails from us... these things happen and I just want to make sure that nobody's inboxes are being clogged needlessly. Also let me know if you have a friend who would like to join & start receiving emails from us about upcoming meetings and all that!

Clubs Week happens the second week of September and gives clubs across campus the chance to reach out to the new and current student population to give them options to get involved in something they have an interest in. As President of the Bookworms, a campus museum volunteer, and a VP for 2 other student groups, I can assure you that getting involved on campus is the BEST thing you can do to enrich your student experience! Stella, Ashley, Hannah and I will be taking part in Clubs Week so stop by and say hi at our table if you have time, we'd love to see you.

Our first meeting will probably be towards the end of September... I'm thinking the 4th but likely 5th week of the month. I'll set up the usual poll for times and what not, so no worries there. Remember the summer challenge of reading a book outside your usual genre comfort zone? We'll be discussing our different adventures in summer reading and ideas for monthly genres at the September meeting. In the meantime, have a safe 101 week and hopefully the transition into student life isn't too rough on you all ;)

Cheers,
Madeline (but please call me Maddie if you want)

ps. I have bought some news teas for all of you to try, so get excited to be converted into loving tea if you don't already!

A Quick "Hello" from the New Executive... and A Summer Challenge!

Dear Bookworms,

My name is Madeline and I am the new president of the uOttawa Bookworms for the 2013-2014 school year. I've been a member since I was in my first year here and now, entering into my fourth and final year, I feel so lucky to have been given the privilege to take on a bigger role in this amazing club. I wanted to post on the blog before summer really begins to introduce the new executive team of the Bookworms and to give you all a summer “challenge” so we will each have a unique experience to talk about when we reconvene in September for our first meeting of the year. The executive and I have collectively decided to not have meetings over the summer because 3 of the 4 of us are going overseas for part of it and it would be tricky to keep the club going when everyone’s schedules are so different than during the 8 months we are enrolled in classes.

Here is your executive for the next year! After their name and position is a fun book-related fact about that person so you can have a little bit of an idea of who they are even though you may not have met yet or do not know them very well.

President = Madeline Smolarz : “In the summer of 2009, I lived in Ireland in a couple different cities over the course of a month. When I was in Dublin, I visited Trinity College and saw the Book of Kells. It was the most breathtaking experience I have ever had with a book and I will never forget being in that dim room with the book laid out in a glass case in the middle, illuminated by a spotlight. I highly recommend it if you ever find yourself on the Emerald Isle.” ~ Madeline
Vice-President = Ashley Chen : She prefers light reading rather than the heavier, deeper stuff some of us love because she does so much memory work being in the sciences and likes to give her brain a break when she has down time to read. Fiction and fantasy are her genres of choice.
Secretary = Stella Chen : She really enjoys action-packed books, usually with science fiction or fantasy elements in them.
Treasurer = Hannah Fraser : “In 2010, my family and I went on a cruise of the Mediterranean. During this time, I was a right in the middle of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and loving the story. On the fifth day of the cruise, we arrived in Athens for a tour of the Acropolis, the temple of Zeus and all the various ruins. Being a huge lover of Greek mythology and having just read the Odyssey, this was an extremely exciting event for me. After our official tour was finished, my family and I stopped for a picnic on a high point of a trail that overlooked the city. While relaxing, I took out Percy Jackson and continued to read about the 'real life' Olympians while overlooking the Parthenon. It was definitely the coolest place I've ever read, and it suited the book extremely well!” ~ Hannah

Now for your summer challenge, bookworms. I know, you’ve been dying to know what it could be since I mentioned it way up there in the first paragraph. Well hold onto your hats because here it is... Read a book completely outside your preferred genre. Surprised? Shocked? Thrilled to get the green light to get to try something new? Well go for it, dear bookworms, because we’ll be discussing our respective experiences with the challenge in September when we sit down with our customary tea and baked goods. So there will be no set book for you to read over the summer; the choice is yours. I’m personally excited to read a thriller / mystery, far away from my historical fiction favourites.

I wish you all a happy, healthy, sunburn-free summer filled with friends, family, and fantastic books.

Yours in reading,
Madeline

The Bookworms will resume in September - and we'll be missing you!

Dearest Bookworms,

Steph and I are both graduating, and last week was our final meeting with the Bookworms.  A few members of the club have stepped forward to take over the executive positions, and we'll leave it to them to introduce themselves!  At the meeting, we decided to break from the club over the summer, so there won't be any meetings over the next few months.  The new leadership will take over the club in September.

We both want to thank everyone who participated in the club - for the great book suggestions, the delicious baked goods and the interesting discussions.  We've both been members since first year so it's very bittersweet to be graduating.  The Bookworms has been a great place to chat, drink tea, and spend time with fellow book lovers.  We've had such a positive experience in the club and we're very much going to miss all of you fine people!

Best of luck with everything, and we hope you have a great time in the club next year.  A fond farewell to you all!

Bookworms next year?

Hi Bookworms!

First, we have a room booked for next Sunday.  We'll be meeting in UCU206, down the hall from the Tim Horton's in the university centre.

Next, we want to let you all know that we are both graduating this year, so the book club will need new leadership!  If you are interested in taking over the club, please send us an email by next Wednesday (Mar 20), and indicate if you will be attending the meeting on Sun, Mar 24.  The current constitution has roles for two co-presidents, a treasurer and a secretary, but those positions are definitely not set in stone - you do NOT have to indicate in your email which position you would like.  We will either have a separate meeting with those interested, or if all the interested people can attend on Sunday, we will discuss it as our first order of business then.  Running the club is not a lot of work - mainly just updating the website and attending the meetings - and anyone can take over!  Once again, if you're interested in running the club in any capacity, please send us an email (uottawabookworms@gmail.com) by Wed, Mar 20, and indicate whether you will attend the meeting on Sunday.  We'll send out more information once we have heard back from you.

Thank you Bookworms and it's been wonderful being a part of this club with all of you!

Sunday, March 10, 2013

Meeting Sun, Mar 24 @2PM

Thanks for voting, Bookworms - we'll see you on Sun, Mar 24 @2PM!  We'll post the location once we have a room booked.

March meeting time/date

Hey Bookworms!  The poll is now available to vote for a meeting date and time.  We picked the week of Mar 18-24 because the following week has the Easter long weekend, which makes things a bit more complicated.  The poll will close this Sunday Mar 10 at 6PM so get your votes in!

Saturday, February 23, 2013

Fables: Legends In Exile

The votes are in for our fairy tale selection: this month, we'll be reading Fables: Legends In Exile by Bill Willingham.  This is the first volume in a graphic novel series, so it's like a genre two-for-one!  We'll be posting for a meeting date/time soon, and we're aiming to have the meeting in late March or early April before finals start.  Happy reading!

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Once upon a time...

Hey Bookworms!  Thanks for voting for a genre.  By a VERY narrow margin, fairy tales has won as this month's genre!

There are hundreds of fairy tales and retellings, so picking a book is going to be tricky!  Basically, if the "classic" fairy tales win, Steph and I will pick 5-10 tales by the winning author, and if the "various authors" wins, we'll pick 5-10 fairy tales by any author.  If one of the retellings wins, then we'll just read that single novel.  Please leave a comment on this post or send us an email to tell us if there is a specific fairy tale that you would like to be included in the selections!

Here are some options for classic fairy tales - click the links for an idea of which fairy tales each author wrote so that you can tell us which ones to include.  Most of these fairy tales can be found for free online through Project Gutenberg.

Here are some newer versions - click the links for a description of each book.  We would read one of these books instead of reading selections of classic fairy tales.
The poll is up online now and will close Saturday at 6PM.  Be sure to vote, and let us know which fairy tales you would like to be included!

Monday, February 18, 2013

Come join us on Goodreads

The club is now a group on Goodreads! If you are a member feel free to join the group at http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/95324-uottawa-bookworms. If that doesn't work, shoot us an email with your email address and we'll send you an invite to the group. On the group we can have some online discussions about the books and other topics. Let us know if there are any issues. If you don't know about Goodreads, it's a nice way to keep track of books you've read, are reading, want to read, and follow what your friends are reading (i.e. your fellow bookworms)!

Don't feel any pressure to sign up for an account - all of our updates and voting will still be on this blog.
Please vote for the genre and send in suggestions, that's all for now. Keep calm and read on!

Sunday, February 17, 2013

Genre poll!

Hey Bookworms!  Thanks to everyone who came to our meeting yesterday - 'twas a lot of fun!  The poll is currently up to vote for this month's genre.  We're aiming to have the meeting in early April before finals so we'll try to get the genre and book decided relatively quickly so you can read it with time to spare.

The genres this month are:

  • Bucket List Books - books you want to read before you die
  • Graphic Novels
  • Books Set In Other Countries - books that happen in places other than Canada, in any time period
  • Fairy Tales

If you have any suggestions for books in these genres, please send us an email at uottawabookworms@gmail.com.  The poll will close this Wed, Feb 20 at 6PM, and we'll get the book poll up shortly after that.  Vote away!

Saturday's meeting in UCU207

Hey Bookworms!  We're almost at Reading Week (thank goodness!) and that means it's almost time for our book club meeting.  We just received confirmation for the room.  The meeting will be held this Saturday, Feb 16 at 2PM in UCU207 (that's the same room as last month, down the hall from the Tim Horton's in the university centre).  See you there - and if not, happy Reading Week!

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

Coffee 'Social' on Saturday

I've spoken with a few of you who can't make the meeting and in light of that this Saturday there will be an informal coffee 'social'. It's not a meeting or anything, just a chance to hang out and discuss books we're reading (more intended for those who will be absent but anyone can come!). Let's say around 3pm on Saturday (Feb. 9) at Planet Coffee in the Byward Market (The address is 24A York Street, it's kind of hidden away in a courtyard). There should be enough space in there and they have delicious coffee/tea. See you soon Bookworms!

Friday, February 1, 2013

Meeting Sat, Feb 16 @2PM

The votes are in!  We'll be meeting on Saturday, Feb 16 at 2PM.  We'll post a location as soon as we have a room booked.  Happy reading!

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

Please vote for a meeting date and time!

Hi Bookworms!

I hope you are all enjoying this month's selection so far.  Stephanie said she literally could not put it down.  I consider myself warned - I'm saving it for after my midterm so that I won't be distracted from studying!  Also, if you haven't found a copy yet, the book is still 20% off at Perfect Books (Elgin and Somerset, maybe a 10 minute walk from campus) until Thursday.

The poll for the meeting date and time is now available.  The scheduling is a bit complicated this month because of Reading Week so we've included a lot of different options.  There are choices for the week before and the week after Reading Week in light of midterms, travel plans, etc.

Please note that Feb 16-17 is the first weekend of Reading Week.  If you are going to be out of town that weekend, please don't vote for it!

The poll closes this Friday, Feb 1 at midnight.  Vote away!

Sunday, January 27, 2013

“the right book exactly, at exactly the right time” - Robin Sloan

Well Bookworms, you have chosen Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore as our next book. Excellent choice! (Secret confession: I anticipated it would win, bought it this morning preemptively, and haven't put it down since.)

Since it's the monthly feature at Perfect Books (258 Elgin Street, close to campus) the book is 20% off there if you want to endorse a local independent  bookstore. It's also available at Chapters.

Thursday, January 24, 2013

Howdy Partners!

Sadly, Modern Westerns did not make the cut this month (nor did Science-Fiction).

Our winner is "Books About Books"!!! Take a gander at the poll and choose which book you want to read this month. Links to pages about the books are under the "This Month's Meeting" tab. Y'all come back now and vote before Saturday at midnight (otherwise next meeting we will all talk like cowboys).

Sunday, January 20, 2013

Moving on to the next month

Hey Bookworms!
Great meeting today, thanks to everyone that came (old and new faces)! We are glad to hear about all the reading everybody is doing. After all the suggestions today the poll for the genre is now up. Vote before Wednesday night and email us any more suggestions you have that we didn't write down for books in these genres.

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

Sunday's meeting in new room!

Hey Bookworms!  We just wanted to let you know that Sunday's meeting will be in UCU207 - it's a different room.  It's just down the hall from the Tim Horton's in the university centre, we think...

We hope to see you this Sunday, Jan 20 @2PM in UCU207.  You bring genre and book suggestions, and we'll bring the food!

Hobbit movie night on Friday + next meeting poll

Hi Bookworms!  We hope your first day back wasn't too rough!

It looks like our field trip will be taking place this Friday night.  We'll meet at the Rideau Centre, just outside the theatre, at 4PM.  The theatres, if you haven't been there before, are on the top floor of the mall and there's a staircase to them near the American Eagle and the Sephora.  We'll meet right at the top of the stairs at 4.  If you suspect you're going to be late, send us an email and we can save you a seat.

We'd also like to meet next week for our discussion of Divergent/ Insurgent.  A poll is up now for the meeting date and time.  Please vote by Thursday at 5PM.

Good luck for this first week back!  See you Friday night.
