Fables: Legends In Exile

The votes are in for our fairy tale selection: this month, we'll be reading Fables: Legends In Exile by Bill Willingham.  This is the first volume in a graphic novel series, so it's like a genre two-for-one!  We'll be posting for a meeting date/time soon, and we're aiming to have the meeting in late March or early April before finals start.  Happy reading!

Once upon a time...

Hey Bookworms!  Thanks for voting for a genre.  By a VERY narrow margin, fairy tales has won as this month's genre!

There are hundreds of fairy tales and retellings, so picking a book is going to be tricky!  Basically, if the "classic" fairy tales win, Steph and I will pick 5-10 tales by the winning author, and if the "various authors" wins, we'll pick 5-10 fairy tales by any author.  If one of the retellings wins, then we'll just read that single novel.  Please leave a comment on this post or send us an email to tell us if there is a specific fairy tale that you would like to be included in the selections!

Here are some options for classic fairy tales - click the links for an idea of which fairy tales each author wrote so that you can tell us which ones to include.  Most of these fairy tales can be found for free online through Project Gutenberg.

Here are some newer versions - click the links for a description of each book.  We would read one of these books instead of reading selections of classic fairy tales.
The poll is up online now and will close Saturday at 6PM.  Be sure to vote, and let us know which fairy tales you would like to be included!

Come join us on Goodreads

The club is now a group on Goodreads! If you are a member feel free to join the group at http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/95324-uottawa-bookworms. If that doesn't work, shoot us an email with your email address and we'll send you an invite to the group. On the group we can have some online discussions about the books and other topics. Let us know if there are any issues. If you don't know about Goodreads, it's a nice way to keep track of books you've read, are reading, want to read, and follow what your friends are reading (i.e. your fellow bookworms)!

Don't feel any pressure to sign up for an account - all of our updates and voting will still be on this blog.
Please vote for the genre and send in suggestions, that's all for now. Keep calm and read on!

Genre poll!

Hey Bookworms!  Thanks to everyone who came to our meeting yesterday - 'twas a lot of fun!  The poll is currently up to vote for this month's genre.  We're aiming to have the meeting in early April before finals so we'll try to get the genre and book decided relatively quickly so you can read it with time to spare.

The genres this month are:

  • Bucket List Books - books you want to read before you die
  • Graphic Novels
  • Books Set In Other Countries - books that happen in places other than Canada, in any time period
  • Fairy Tales

If you have any suggestions for books in these genres, please send us an email at uottawabookworms@gmail.com.  The poll will close this Wed, Feb 20 at 6PM, and we'll get the book poll up shortly after that.  Vote away!

Saturday's meeting in UCU207

Hey Bookworms!  We're almost at Reading Week (thank goodness!) and that means it's almost time for our book club meeting.  We just received confirmation for the room.  The meeting will be held this Saturday, Feb 16 at 2PM in UCU207 (that's the same room as last month, down the hall from the Tim Horton's in the university centre).  See you there - and if not, happy Reading Week!

Coffee 'Social' on Saturday

I've spoken with a few of you who can't make the meeting and in light of that this Saturday there will be an informal coffee 'social'. It's not a meeting or anything, just a chance to hang out and discuss books we're reading (more intended for those who will be absent but anyone can come!). Let's say around 3pm on Saturday (Feb. 9) at Planet Coffee in the Byward Market (The address is 24A York Street, it's kind of hidden away in a courtyard). There should be enough space in there and they have delicious coffee/tea. See you soon Bookworms!
